By the time he was elected to the pontificate in 1153, he was the dean of the College of Cardinals and one of its oldest members. As Pope Anastasius IV, the man resolved a number of disputes with the Holy Roman Empire and the See of York in England. But the pope died only eighteen months after his nomination, being succeeded by Pope Adrian IV in 1154.
